Four Paws Havanese Dam

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Please contact us for additional questions not answered below.

What kind of health testing is done on the dams and sires?

All of our dams and sires must pass the four health tests recommended by the AKC and Havanese Club of America as well as a DNA test.

These are the:

  1. BAER (Congenital Deafness)
  2. CAER (Eyes)
  3. Patella Luxation
  4. Hip Dysplasia
  5. Embark DNA
What kind of health guarantee comes with each puppy?

We have a 2 year health guarantee on all of our puppies.

Do you have an extended health guarantee?

Yes, we do! Although genetics play a large part in a dog’s health over the years, feeding your dogs proper nutrition is equally important. We will extend your health guarantee from 2 years to 6 years if you feed one of our selected food brands and feed one of our selected supplement brands. To make it as easy as possible we have several food brand options and 2 supplement options.

What do I need when I pick up my puppy?

We will send you home with a Puppy Welcome Kit that will include most of the things you need, what you need to bring will depend greatly on how long your drive is. I would recommend bringing potty pads, a carrier or kennel, extra water, a collapsible water bowl, and a blanket.

Can we come and see your home, where the puppies and adults live?

Yes, by appointment only. You may not be able to see our entire house if we have puppies under 8 weeks because they have not had any vaccinations.

What happens to the adult dogs when they retire from breeding?

If they are in a Guardian home they will be spayed/neutered and then they will live out their life in that home. If they live at Four Paws Havanese they will stay at our house as cherished members of our family. I never wanted to sell our dogs after they were done with breeding because of a few reasons. The first is that I get very attached to my dogs and letting them go would be very difficult for me. The second is that I did not want to just sell them after they were done breeding, to me that would just feel heartless. I keep every single one of my breeding dogs, and pay for all of their vet expenses that occur when they get older. This does mean that I rely on Guardian homes quite a lot. Guardian homes allow me to expand my breeding program without having too many dogs at my home.

What size do you expect the puppies to be when full grown?

It is hard to say but I would expect most of our puppies when full grown to fall between 8 pounds and 13 pounds. We do not guarantee that the puppies will fall between this range, this is just a rough estimate.

Do the puppies receive any socialization?

Yes, all of our puppies receive extensive socialization as part of our training program. Socialization is an extremely important part of a dog’s life and it is often overlooked.

Do you begin the potty training process?

Yes, we potty train our dogs from the age of 4 weeks old, we have found that our potty training method is very effective and as long as the new owner follows through with the potty training foundation we have given your puppy.

Do you begin crate training?

Yes, we begin introducing our puppies to the crate from the age of 6 weeks. More formal crate training begins at around 7-8 weeks. By the time you bring your puppy home your puppy should be very familiar with their crate. You will still have to introduce them to their new crate at their new home but they should adapt quickly.

What vaccinations do you give each puppy before going home?

I have researched extensively to evaluate which vaccines and boosters to give my puppies. Here at Four Paws Havanese we have taken into consideration AKC’s Puppy vaccination Protocol as well as Dr. Dodd’s Protocol for puppy vaccinations. Along with doing countless hours of research on many other websites, to formulate the safest protocol to protect our puppies from dangerous disease and viruses while still keeping them safe. We give our puppies their distemper and parvovirus vaccine at 10-12 weeks of age.

Do puppies receive Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS) and Early Scent Introduction (ESI)?

Yes, we do this as we want to provide each and every one of our puppies the best start possible. Puppies that were exposed to both ENS and ESI showed improved cardiovascular performance, stronger heart beats, stronger adrenal glands, more tolerance to stress, and greater resistance to disease.

Can I purchase one of your puppies with Full AKC registration?

No, we only sell our puppies with Limited AKC registration. The difference between Full AKC registration and Limited AKC registration is that Limited AKC registration does not include breeding rights and the puppy will have to be spayed/neutered.
